Reformation 500 Anniversary Album, Celebration of Spirit
1517 | Martin Luther | 2017
The inspiration for the Reformation 500 album began with a commission by best selling author, Leonard Sweet to compose a new Reformation hymn and perform it in Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany as part of the 500th Protestant Anniversary celebration. Rachel served as producer, composer, conductor, and pianist on this album that went on to hit #1 on the Traditional Classical Billboard Charts.
The Reformation album features selections from the 16th century, a rousing version of A Mighty Fortress is Our God and Non moriar sed vivam by Luther, new arrangements of Luther’s hymns, including the commissioned hymn, We Stand in Righteousness, and choral works by Rachel Currea. Of special interest is the track, In pace in idipsum, a first worldwide release that was considered “the lost Luther motet” until it’s discovery in 2000 by scholar Ole Kongsted. The album closes with the powerful track, Hymn to the Holy Spirit featuring choir, orchestra, and soprano Megan Barrera.
